Explore Ghana
The Volta Region rewards travellers who like their scenery with a story attached. In the north, around Liati Wote, the Agumatsa Range rises sharply: Mount Afadja (Afadjato) is climbed on a guided 3 km summit trail of about 1.5 to 2 hours, with Aduadu Mountain usually added as an extension beyond the summit. The same trailhead, the Afadjato-Tagbo Eco-Tourism Reception Centre, arranges hikes to Tagbo Falls, whose sacred stream is crossed three times by bridges on the forest path.
Further south, the region turns cultural and coastal. Tafi Abuife is a small Ewe kente-weaving community where you can watch weavers at work and buy cloth directly, while Tafi Atome protects mona and patas monkeys in a sacred grove. Amedzofe offers Mount Gemi and its summit cross, plus the canopy walkway at Ote Waterfalls, reached by roughly 259 concrete steps. Along the water, Keta Lagoon is Ghana's largest lagoon and a Ramsar wetland known for bird watching, with the partly ruined 1784 Danish Fort Prinzenstein nearby. Markets at Ho, Denu, Aflao and Kpando-Torkor show the region at work, and the Lower Volta Bridge at Sogakope carries the N1 across the river.
Good to know
Plan around the wetter months if you intend to hike, and check trail and walkway conditions before setting out, as some routes are steep and guided. Community-run sites such as the Tafi Atome sanctuary and the Liati Wote reception centre arrange guides on arrival, so allow time and carry cash. Distances between the hills, the coast and the markets are real, so group places by area rather than trying to see everything in a day. Ho Airport serves the region, and the N1 crosses the Volta at Sogakope, but many travellers move between towns by road. For the Anyanui to Ada Foah boat trip, confirm departures locally beforehand.
