Amedzofe sits high in the Avatime Hills of Ghana's Volta Region, a hill settlement at the foot of Mount Gemi where the air is cooler and the views stretch out over valley after valley. People come here to walk, climb and look out, and the town's sites are all close to one another, so a few days can hold a lot.

What the places share is the hills themselves. Mount Gemi is the peak above the town, climbed for its summit cross and wide views. The Amedzofe Township and Avatime Hills Viewpoint takes in the settlement and the surrounding ridges, while the Amedzofe Caves and the Amedzofe Sacred Cave, formed from a cliff of Mount Gemi, add older, quieter layers of heritage to the same landscape.

They differ in effort and in mood. The Amedzofe Canopy Walkway at Ote Waterfalls is reached by a steep guided trail of roughly 259 concrete steps. Abadzeme Falls asks for a steep trail of about two hours. Ote Lower Falls, the lower tier of the multi-tiered Ote Falls, is pathless and approached via Gbadzeme village. Some days here are for climbing, others simply for standing still and looking.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around walking, not driving: several of these sites are reached on foot, and the trails to the canopy walkway, Abadzeme Falls and the sacred cave are steep. Wear shoes with grip, carry water, and allow more time than you think you need. A local guide is worth arranging for the canopy walkway and the falls, and community tourism is part of how these places are run. Distances between sites are short, but paths vary, so ask in Amedzofe about current conditions before setting out. Check opening arrangements and guide availability in advance, especially in the wetter months, and travel in daylight.
