Explore Ghana
The Volta Region is walking country. Its mountains and hills rise from forest and farmland, and almost every one of them rewards the climb with a view: over the Avatime Hills, across Lake Volta, or back towards the towns below. Mount Gemi stands above Amedzofe, where a summit cross marks the top and the surrounding hills open out in every direction. Amedzofe itself sits at the mountain's foot, a hill settlement known for hiking, valley views and the Ote Falls.
Each place here is climbed on foot, but they differ in character. Mount Adaklu is a flat-topped mountain of roughly 580 m about 12 km from Ho, reached on guided hikes from Breeze Bar at its foot, with a cave along the way. Twin Mountain near Liati Wote offers a quieter, more demanding guided hike in the Agumatsa Range. Above Kpando, a mountain-top recreation site adds a zipline, canopy walk and a telescope view over Lake Volta. Mafi Kumase Igneous Mountain, known locally as Akpokpo, is climbed informally by a stepped route to views over the town.
Good to know
Plan hikes for the morning, when it is cooler and views are clearer, and allow more time than you think you need. Several of these places are reached on guided or community-led hikes, so arrange your guide before you travel rather than on the day. Getting between them usually means road travel via Ho or Kpando, so group nearby hills into one trip. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and rain protection, and check current access, trail conditions and guide arrangements locally before setting out.
