About Mount Gemi
Mount Gemi is the peak above Amedzofe, a village in the Ho West District of Ghana's Volta Region. Visit Ghana describes the mountain as the one at whose foot the village sits, and lists it among the area's draws alongside the Ote (Otay) Falls, the caves and a canopy walkway. The mountain is also known as Mount Amedzofe, and one secondary account records the older name Mount Gayito.
The summit is marked by a 4-metre-tall cross. Visit Ghana attributes the cross to German missionaries in the 1930s, and a church and bell tower stand on one of the highest points in the village. A UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce blog post (PaJohn Dadson, October 2023) states the cross was built in 1939 to mark 50 years since the missionaries' arrival in the Amedzofe area, that its initials gave the peak its current name, and that remnants of a German World War II communication antenna are attached to it. GhanaWeb (People & Places, February 2023) reports that residents and tourists climb the mountain each Easter to offer prayers.
The climb is the main reason to come. Visit Ghana gives the steep trail to the top as roughly 1.5 hours at difficulty 3, with a 360-degree view from the summit; the same source advises climbing early in the morning because the route has no shade. The UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce account describes a gentler gradient reaching the top in about 20 minutes at a casual pace, so allow for a range of times. Ancestral Tours notes visibility is often poor during the Harmattan season, from November to March. In clear weather, Visit Ghana says the views from the mountain and the church site reach as far as Lake Volta.
Amedzofe lies about 35 km from Ho. From Ho, drive north to Matse and continue to the Dzolokpuita junction, then turn right and climb through Vane to Amedzofe. Trotros and buses from the Ho lorry station run infrequently; another option is a trotro from Ho to Hohoe, asking to be dropped at Dzolokpuita and hiking the remaining 8 km. Visit Ghana publishes village visitor-centre hours of 6:00 am to 5:30 pm daily, with flush toilets, refreshments, a small gift shop and guides who help plan tours; no separate hours for the summit trail were found. Accommodation is limited to one or two local guesthouses, with homestay and camping arranged at the visitor centre. Elevation figures differ between sources and remain disputed; no separately sourced coordinates for the summit were found.
