About Amedzofe Canopy Walkway
The Amedzofe Canopy Walkway is a suspended forest canopy walkway at Ote Waterfalls in Amedzofe, in the Ho West District of the Volta Region. Amedzofe sits in the Avatime Mountains, north of Ho and south of Hohoe, and is described as one of Ghana's highest inhabited towns, at roughly 677–750 metres above sea level. The waterfall lies toward the eastern section of the town, about 2 km from the town centre, and the site is roughly 190 km — about four hours' drive — from Accra.
The walkway is reached on foot. From the visitor centre, a guided forest trail descends steeply into a ravine by way of roughly 250–300 concrete steps, most commonly cited as 259, leading down to the walkway and the falls. The return ascent is physically demanding, and the paths are narrow and can be slippery when wet. Sources state the route is not suitable for visitors with significant mobility restrictions or severe respiratory issues. Local guides supervise crossings, limit how many people are on a bridge span at one time, and the walkway has high safety railings and netting.
From the elevated sections, the walkway offers views over the surrounding forest and the multi-tiered Ote Waterfalls, reported at about 80 metres tall. The forest around the falls supports birds, reptiles, butterflies and other wildlife. Ote Falls is culturally significant to local people and is regarded as a sacred location where rituals are occasionally held.
The site is community-managed, with trained local guides, and visitors register and pay at a visitor centre or office before starting the trail. Information displays are reported, along with camping facilities and picnic or recreational green areas around the waterfall. No confirmed restroom, restaurant or shop details were found, so visitors should not assume these are available.
The walkway is described as the first of its kind in the Volta Region and the second in Ghana after Kakum. Accounts differ on when it opened: one report describes it as opened to the public around 2021, while another states it was commissioned in November 2022 as the region's first eco-tourism facility of its kind. Opening hours, fees and precise coordinates are not confirmed in the available sources.
