About Tagbo Falls
Tagbo Falls is a waterfall at Liati Wote in the Afadzato South District of Ghana's Volta Region, roughly 27 km east of Hohoe. The Tagbo River drops in several stages, the last of them about 60 m high, through semi-deciduous rainforest on the Akwapim-Togo mountain range near Mount Afadjato.
The falls are reached on foot from Liati Wote, a community-based tourism village of about 600 residents at the foot of Mount Afadjato, Ghana's highest peak. The walk is described as relatively easy and takes about 45 minutes to one hour, crossing three bridges over the meandering river and passing tropical farmlands and coffee plantations. The surrounding area is noted for butterfly diversity and birdlife.
At the foot of the falls there is a natural pool and a picnic spot. Whether swimming is possible depends on the season, and signage at the falls advises against swimming. The Tagbo River is regarded as sacred and holds a spiritual role in the community.
Practical arrangements are handled locally. A community tourism desk in Liati Wote arranges guides, and Tagbo Falls Lodge, an eco-lodge, sits at the edge of the village within walking distance of the falls. The operator's own pricing page for the Afadjato-Tagbo Ecotourism Center lists a Tagbo Falls hike only at GHS 25.00 for Ghanaian adults and GHS 50.00 for non-Ghanaian adults, and a combined Afadjato and Tagbo Falls visit at GHS 40.00 and GHS 80.00 respectively, with student, volunteer and organised-group rates also listed. Those prices exclude a tip for site guides, which the page describes as mandatory. Fees and conditions can change, so confirm current rates and opening arrangements with the tourism desk before travelling.
