Explore Ghana
Ghana's islands are strung across two very different waters: the vast inland expanse of Lake Volta and the brackish, bird-rich lagoons of the coast. On Lake Volta you can cruise from Akosombo to Dodi Island, an inhabited island reached by a roughly two-hour boat trip, or join the Dodi World cruises aboard the three-deck MV Dodi Princess II, with live band music and water sports along the way. Further north, guided boat trips leave Kpando Torkor, a fishing and ferry landing point, while Konklobi Island in Biakoye District remains natural and largely undeveloped.
The coast offers a gentler rhythm. In the Volta Region, the Keta Lagoon Complex is a Ramsar site where boats carry visitors out to small, undeveloped sand islands to watch birds, and the Keta Lagoon Islands are reached by locally arranged boat from Keta town. Further west, Bobowasi Island sits uninhabited in Axim Bay, known for its early-twentieth-century Axim Lighthouse.
What these places share is water, boats and a slower pace. They differ in character: some are inhabited and community-run, others are wild and empty; some are resorts with pools and restaurants, such as Platinum Blue Island Resort near the Adome Bridge and Eli Boutique Hotel and Beach Resort near Keta, and others are simply sand, birds and open sky.
Good to know
Plan around the water, not the clock. Boat trips are the main way to reach most of these islands, and some, such as the Keta Lagoon Islands, are arranged locally rather than booked in advance, so allow flexibility and ask in the town first. Cruises and guided trips, including those from Akosombo and Kpando Torkor, are best confirmed ahead of your travel date. Check conditions before setting out: lagoon and lake crossings depend on weather and on boats being available. Bring sun protection, water and cash, and remember that several islands are undeveloped with no facilities, so take everything out with you. If you would rather have a base with a restaurant and pool, resorts near Atimpoku and Keta make comfortable starting points.
