Why visit

About Vume Pottery Village

Vume Pottery Village is the pottery-making quarter of Vume, a small town in the South Tongu District of Ghana's Volta Region. It sits near Sogakope and alongside the Volta River, roughly two towns from the Lower Volta (Sogakope) Bridge. The town's residents have long been noted for the art of pottery, and Vume is widely described as a hub of pottery in Ghana.

The craft is said to have been brought to Vume by Denkyira potters who settled there in the early 1700s, and to have continued for more than 300 years. Pottery has largely been the preserve of women, though men also work as potters. Some establishments have received outside support, including a kiln built by the Lebanese Women Association.

For a visitor, the appeal is the working craft itself rather than a formal attraction. Large pots are displayed along the roadside of the Accra-Aflao / Trans-West African Coastal Highway, and travellers can stop at roadside workshops to watch potters at work. Documented stages of the process include clay preparation — clay excavated locally, tested for salt, then kneaded and pressed — shaping by hand and on a manually turned potter's wheel, drying that can last from days to months, and firing in a kiln for about three to four days until the pots turn terracotta.

Potters here produce round and square vessels, flowerpots, Asanka bowls and other household ware. The work is sold locally and shipped mainly to customers in Accra and Nigeria, so the roadside displays are part of a trade that reaches well beyond the town.

Practical planning is limited by what is documented. The workshops and pot displays lie along the highway, which makes them a plausible stop for travellers passing between Accra and the Aflao border corridor. The Calabash Hub reports about one hour and forty-five minutes by trotro from Madina station in Accra to Sogakope. Opening hours, entry fees, guided tours, workshop bookings and on-site facilities are not documented in the available sources, so visitors should treat these as unknown rather than assume them. The coordinates given here are for the town of Vume and are not necessarily a visitor entrance.
