Why visit

About Mount Afadja

Mount Afadja, widely known as Afadjato, is one of the highest mountains in Ghana, rising to 885 metres (2,904 ft) above sea level. It stands in the Agumatsa Range near the villages of Gbledi Gbogame and Liati Wote, in the Volta Region on Ghana's border with Togo, roughly 178 km northeast of Accra. The name is worth getting right: "Afadja" is the mountain, while "to" means "mountain" in Ewe, so locals say "Afadjato". The Visit Ghana tourism board gives the correct form as Mount Afadja. The peak belongs to the Agumatsa sub-range of the West Africa Mountains, and its neighbouring peak is Mount Aduadu.

The mountain is among the most visited attractions in the Volta Region, drawing thousands of visitors each year. For most of them the appeal is the climb itself: a summit trail of about 3 km that takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours, passing through farmland, forest and open rocky terrain with steep inclines. There is no road to the top — access is by hiking only. From the summit, hikers get panoramic views of the surrounding hills, valleys and Liati Wote, and on clear days Lake Volta may be visible. A local guide is required.

The trailhead and visitor centre are at Liati Wote, reachable by taxi or tro-tro from Hohoe in about 30 minutes. The centre has flush toilets and a six-unit rustic guesthouse with showers, where mosquito nets, sheets and towels are provided; camping is available and homestays can be arranged. A community cook provides meals at an open-air building, and liquid refreshments are available in the village. The same trailhead serves hikes to Mount Afadja and Tagbo Falls.

Published hours are 8 am to 5 pm daily. The Afadjato-Tagbo Ecotourism Center (ATEC), the community tourism office at Liati Wote, publishes its tariff: the Afadjato hike alone is GHS 25 for Ghanaian adults and GHS 50 for non-Ghanaian adults, with lower tiers for students, volunteers and organised groups, and a combined Afadjato and Tagbo Falls ticket at GHS 40 / GHS 80. Prices exclude a mandatory tip for site guides. The tourism office accepts cash only, and there are no ATMs within roughly an hour's radius.
