Explore Ghana
The Volta Region is water country. Ghana's largest lagoon, the lower Volta River and the estuary where the two meet Ada Foah all lie within reach of each other, and much of the best of it is seen from a boat. That is the thread running through these fifteen places: almost every one of them offers a boat experience, whether a short crossing, a guided lake trip or a paddle out to a bird island.
They differ in mood and setting. Around Keta you have the Atlantic at Aborigines Beach and the calm, brackish Keta Lagoon, where boatmen take visitors to the Keta Lagoon Islands and to birdwatching on the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site. Inland, guided trips leave Kpando Torkor on Lake Volta, arranged by Emo Tour & Guiding, while Avu Lagoon (Xavi) protects a freshwater wetland and Ghana's only sitatunga. Further south, the roughly 7 km crossing between Anyanui and Ada Foah runs past mangroves and sandy banks, with Anyanui Market on the far side.
Some places are resorts where the water is part of the stay, such as Sogakope Beach Resort & Spa, The Chill River Resort and Waterfront Paradise Resort on the lower Volta, or Meet Me There Eco Lodge and Paps Beach Camp on the coast.
Good to know
Plan around the water rather than the road. The Anyanui to Ada Foah crossing is the natural link between the Volta Region and the Ada side, and Paps Beach Camp at Agorkedzi is reached by boat across the estuary from Ada Foah, so ask locally about departures before you set out. Anyanui Market is a Wednesday market, worth timing a crossing around. Boat trips from Kpando Torkor are guided, and Emo Tour & Guiding in Kpando also arranges wider North Volta excursions. Meet Me There Eco Lodge takes lodging guests only, with advance reservations. Confirm boat availability, life jackets and current conditions on the day, and check ahead for Xavi Bird Sanctuary, where operating status is uncertain.
