Why visit
About Aflao Market
Aflao Market is a marketplace in Aflao, a border town in the Ketu South Municipal District of the Volta Region, Ghana, sitting on the international boundary with Togo. Its setting is what defines it: the market serves the busy Ghana–Togo border crossing, where cross-border trading is central to the local economy. The crossing has long functioned as a major trade route; roughly 24.9 million kg of trade passed through it annually according to 1996 data.
Aflao itself is a substantial settlement, recorded as Ghana's twenty-eighth most populous with an estimated 66,546 residents in 2012. The town's history reaches back to the Atlantic slave trade, shaped by the Anlo to the west and Little Popo — present-day Aného in Togo — to the east. It changed hands from Danish to British control in 1850 and was added to the Gold Coast in 1879.
For a visitor, the market is best understood as a working border market rather than a staged attraction. Its character comes from the movement of people and goods across the frontier, and from the everyday commerce of a town that straddles two countries. That is the reason to include it in a Volta Region itinerary: not for spectacle, but for a direct look at how trade and daily life operate along an international boundary.
Recent development at the site is modest and documented. In August 2023, the Ketu South Municipal Assembly, MP Abla Dzifa Gomashie and Aflao market traders took site possession for construction of a market shed, funded by the MP's Common Fund and built by Malycon Limited, expected to benefit 12 market women and other traders. A larger US$30 million ultramodern market project, funded by a Chinese grant, has been announced for the Aflao Traditional Area.
Practical details remain largely unverified. No confirmed opening hours, fees, stall layout, toilets, parking or water facilities were found in the available sources, and the market shed was under construction as of the August 2023 report. The coordinates supplied here are for Aflao town (06°08'48.4"N 01°10'47.6"E), not a verified market entrance, so visitors should treat the precise location as approximate and confirm arrangements locally before travelling.
