The Volta Region's coastline runs along the Gulf of Guinea, east of the Volta River mouth, and it is one of the quieter stretches of Ghanaian seaside. These five beaches share golden sand, Atlantic surf and a strong Ewe coastal culture, but they differ in mood. Aborigines Beach at Keta is the family-friendly one, with a long-running resort behind it and boat experiences on offer. Keta Emancipation Beach sits behind Fort Prinzenstein, a place once used for Emancipation Day commemorations and now run as a beach resort. Denu Beach lies between Keta and Aflao in the Ketu South Municipal District, while Dzita Beach belongs to a traditional Ewe fishing village in the Anloga District. Lalana Beach at Anloga is a beachfront resort property, also known as Lalana Beach and Residence. Together they suit travellers who want fishing villages, history and open sand rather than busy resort strips.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the coast rather than a single stop: Keta, Denu, Dzita and Anloga sit along the same shoreline, so you can link several beaches in one trip. Roads and transport between them vary, so allow generous time and ask locally about the best route on the day. Before setting out, check with each beach or resort whether it is open to day visitors, whether food and drink are available, and whether swimming is safe, as surf and currents can be strong. Bring cash, sun protection and water. If you want to stay overnight, Aborigines Beach Resort at Keta and Lalana Beach at Anloga are the resort options listed here.
