Explore Ghana
The Volta Region hides some of Ghana's most atmospheric caves, and this page gathers five of them together. What they share is a sense of discovery: these are places reached on foot, often with a local guide, where rock, forest and water meet. Akpom Waterfall and Limestone Cave at Logba Tota pairs a waterfall with an adjacent limestone cavern, reached by a walk of roughly half an hour from the village. At Amedzofe, a mountain settlement in the Ho West District, you will find both the Amedzofe Caves, described as ancestral caves, and the Amedzofe Sacred Cave, formed from a cliff of Mount Gemi and one of two sacred sites in the district opened to tourism.
They differ in character and in how ready they are for visitors. The Amedzofe sites sit among a town's established visitor attractions, while the Mafi-Avakpedome Ancestral Cave at Adidome in the Central Tongu District is an undeveloped ancestral cave and heritage site. Mount Adaklu, a flat-topped mountain of roughly 580 m about 12 km from Ho, is climbed on guided hikes from Breeze Bar at its foot and adds a cave to its summit views. Some places are cultural and sacred, others are simply wild.
Good to know
Plan around walking, not driving: several of these sites are reached on foot, and Akpom Waterfall and Limestone Cave involves a walk of roughly 30 minutes from Logba Tota. Mount Adaklu is climbed on guided hikes starting from Breeze Bar at its foot, so allow time and take water. Because the sites are spread across Afadzato South, Ho West, Central Tongu and the Adaklu area, expect to travel between districts rather than see them all in one day. Before setting out, check locally whether a site is open and whether a guide is required, especially at the undeveloped Mafi-Avakpedome Ancestral Cave and at the sacred sites in Amedzofe, where local custom should be respected.
