About Lower Volta Bridge
The Lower Volta Bridge, also called the Sogakope Bridge, is a 650-metre crossing on the N1 highway between Sogakope and Sokpoe in the South Tongu District of the Volta Region. It carries the Accra–Aflao road over the Volta River, and its position on that route makes it a working link on the international corridor running from Togo through Ghana towards Côte d'Ivoire. Construction took place between January 1965 and January 1967, carried out by two German contractors.
For most travellers the bridge is a piece of infrastructure passed over in a few minutes rather than a destination in itself. Its interest lies in what happens around it. The bridge is the setting for Tortsogbeza, or River Crossing, an annual festival held at Easter and organised jointly with neighbouring Sokpoe. The festival re-enacts the migration of the people of the Sokpoe traditional area from Notsie in Togo to their present settlement near Sogakope, and includes diving from the bridge.
Reporting on the 33rd edition of the festival describes a chief priest pouring libation on the eastern bank of the Volta River, nineteen clan heads paddling canoes home on the river, drumming, dancing, musket firing and revellers dressed in red. Other activities listed included water sports, diving, beach volleyball, a boat regatta, swimming and canoe riding for visitors. That account indicates the festival is the main occasion on which the bridge and its river setting draw a crowd.
The bridge's condition is a documented concern rather than a matter of local rumour alone. Over the decades it has been affected by poor maintenance and rising traffic volumes, particularly heavy trucks. By 2009 residents were describing it as a "death trap" because of rusting joints and deteriorating sealants, and in 2013 residents appealed to the Ghana Highways Authority to repair rusting expansion joints. Ghana's Parliament has since raised concerns about the bridge's deteriorating condition and the risks it poses to public safety, economic activity and national security. A new cable-stayed crossing, the New Volta Bridge, has been planned by the government.
Practical details are limited. The bridge sits on the N1 highway at Sogakope, in the Volta Region, and is crossed in the course of ordinary road travel on that route. No opening hours, fees, viewing areas, parking or visitor facilities are established by the available sources, and the coordinates recorded here are feature coordinates for the bridge itself rather than a visitor entrance. Anyone planning around the festival should confirm dates and arrangements locally, as the sources describe past editions only.
