Waterfalls in Volta Region

The Volta Region is waterfall country. Tucked into the forested hills of Ho West, Afadzato South and Hohoe, these cascades share a great deal: almost all are reached on foot, most are looked after by the communities around them, and nearly every one rewards you with cool water, green shade and birdsong after a walk. Some, like Wli Waterfalls (Agumatsa Falls) in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, are well known and family friendly, with an easy trail to the lower falls and a longer guided hike to the upper falls. Others, such as Nyagbo Sroe Waterfall, Dufin Waterfall and Akome Waterfalls, are quieter places where you may have the water to yourself.

They differ in character and in effort. Ote Falls above Amedzofe is multi-tiered and reached by a forest trail and canopy walkway, while Tagbo Falls at Liati Wote takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour on foot. Akpom Waterfall at Logba Tota comes with an adjacent limestone cave about 30 minutes from the village, and Tsatsadu Falls at Alavanyo Abehenease is the site of Ghana's first grid-connected micro-hydropower plant. Aflabo Waterfall, Gbadzeme Waterfall, Kulungu Waterfall, Holuta Abuate Waterfall and Tsizor Waterfall each offer their own short walk into the trees.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around walking: many of these falls are reached on foot, from a short stroll to an hour or more, so wear shoes with grip and carry water. Local guides are usual, and several places are community tourism projects, so ask in the village about arrangements and go with a guide where one is offered. Getting between the falls means road travel through the Ho West, Afadzato South and Hohoe areas, so allow generous time and avoid arriving late in the day. Before setting out, check locally that the trail is open and the water is safe, and take rain protection, as forest paths can be slippery after rain.
