Rivers in Volta Region
The Volta Region's rivers give you two very different kinds of day out. On the lower Volta around Sogakope, the water is wide and calm, and the riverside is built for lingering: Cisneros Villa Hotel, Holy Trinity Spa & Health Farm, Sogakope Beach Resort & Spa and Waterfront Paradise Resort all sit on the river, offering spa treatments, pools, private beach areas and boat trips. Further south, near Anyanui, The Chill River Resort looks out towards the estuary, and the roughly 7 km boat crossing from Anyanui to Ada Foah carries you past mangroves and sandy banks.
Inland, the mood changes. The Tagbo River is a sacred stream near Liati Wote, crossed three times by bridges on the forest trail to Tagbo Falls, and it is visited with the community that cares for it. At Xavi, the community-run bird sanctuary on the Lotor River is known for canoe rides and birdlife, though its operating status is uncertain, so it is worth checking before you travel.
What ties these places together is water, birdlife and a slower pace. What separates them is comfort: resort spas on one hand, forest trails and village-run canoe trips on the other.

Sogakope is the natural base if you want riverside resorts close together, while Anyanui and Liati Wote suit travellers heading further south or inland. Distances between these places are not short, so plan one river stop a day rather than trying to link them all. Before setting out, confirm that your chosen resort or sanctuary is open and taking guests, and ask about boat trips and trail guiding in advance, since some experiences depend on local operators and water conditions. Bring sun protection, insect repellent and shoes you don't mind getting muddy for the Tagbo trail.
