About Volta Regional Museum
The Volta Regional Museum is an ethnographic museum in Ho, the capital of Ghana's Volta Region. It is administered by the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board and is listed among Ghana's main museums. The museum opened in 1973 in a building that had previously served as the Office of the Regional House of Chiefs; the building was sold to the Ghana government in 1967.
Its collections are dedicated to the history and traditions of the Volta Region and the Ewe people, and cover both the German colonial period — the region was part of German Togoland before World War I — and the subsequent British era. Displays include the Chair of State of the last colonial German governor, local paintings, woodcraft and pottery, Volta Region kente designs, masks, chiefs' stools, swords, chieftaincy regalia, wooden sculptures and displays on Asante fetish shrines. Temporary exhibitions are also held.
The museum closed for renovation and re-opened in May 2021. The refurbishment added an education centre, a craft market, a vocational facility and a cafeteria; the German government provided a EUR 25,000 grant for the main gallery, with the remainder funded from GMMB's Internally Generated Fund.
The museum stands on Glala Street (also written Glalah Road) in central Ho, in Ho Municipal District. The published coordinates are feature coordinates rather than a verified entrance, so visitors should treat the street address as the more reliable guide. Tour guides are available at GMMB museums, including this one.
Published opening hours state that the museum is open from 8:00am to 5:00pm every day, while the office operates 7:30am–12:30pm and 1:30pm–4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Other listings give differing hours, so it is worth confirming before travelling. Entrance fees, reviewed in July 2023, were GHS 10 for Ghanaian adults and GHS 40 for non-Ghanaian adults, with lower rates for students and primary pupils. Information on step-free access, wheelchair provision, parking, restrooms and Wi-Fi was not found.
