Explore Ghana
Ghana rewards anyone willing to look up and out. This page gathers twenty places where the view is the point: mountain summits, forest canopies, waterfalls, lighthouses, forts and hilltop gardens, spread from the coast to the northern savannah. Some are famous, like the canopy walkway at Kakum National Park near Cape Coast, the paragliding take-off on Odweanoma Mountain at Atibie-Kwahu, and the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku, Ghana's first permanent Volta River crossing. Others are quieter: the ruined Fort Dorothea at Akwidaa, the Tengzug Shrine in the Tongo Hills, or the stepped climb up the igneous mountain at Mafi Kumase.
What they share is height, water or history, and often all three. How they differ is in effort and setting. Jamestown Lighthouse in Accra asks only for 112 steps; Mount Gemi above Amedzofe, Mount Adaklu near Ho and the Kpando Lake Mountain zipline ask for a proper walk. Cape Three Points, Ghana's southernmost tip, is a fishing village with an 1875 lighthouse ruin and a working 1925 tower, while Harbour View Gardens in Takoradi is simply a raised garden, bar and restaurant above the port.
Good to know
Plan around the walking. Several of these places are reached on foot or by guided hike, including Umbrella Rock near Boti Falls, Ote Falls above Amedzofe and Fort Dorothea, where you need permission from the local chief. Boti Falls is seasonal, so check conditions before travelling. Some sites, such as Mount Adaklu and the Kpando Lake Mountain zipline, are run locally, so confirm access and guiding in advance. Distances between regions are long, so group nearby places into one trip rather than criss-crossing the country. Take water, sun protection and sturdy shoes, and carry cash for community fees.
