Explore Ghana
The Volta Region's waters are quiet, green and full of life, and they reward travellers who take the time to slow down. Avu Lagoon (Xavi), near Gui, is a community-protected freshwater wetland within the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar site, and it is the only place in Ghana where you can look for the sitatunga. Further along the coast at Keta, the same Ramsar complex turns brackish, and boat trips out to the bird-breeding islands make Keta Lagoon Birdwatching a gentle, rewarding morning. Inland at Kpando, guided boat trips from Kpando Torkor head out onto Lake Volta itself, leaving from a working fishing and ferry landing point.
What ties these three together is water, birds and boats, and the fact that local people guide you through all of it. What separates them is character. Avu Lagoon is a freshwater wetland with a rare antelope and a strong community tourism feel. Keta is salty, open and best known for its birds and islands. Kpando Torkor is the biggest water of the three, a lake rather than a lagoon, seen from a fishing town.
Good to know
Plan around the water, not the clock. Boat trips at Avu Lagoon, Keta and Kpando Torkor all depend on local guides, so arrange your visit in advance and confirm it before you travel. Ask your guide what the day's conditions are like, since lagoon and lake levels, wind and bird activity change through the year. Getting between the three takes time, so treat them as separate outings rather than one loop, and allow a full day for each. Bring sun protection, water, binoculars if you have them, and shoes you don't mind getting muddy. Carry cash, and check locally what is currently open before setting out.
