Things to do in Hohoe

Hohoe sits in the Volta Region as the capital of Hohoe Municipality, and it makes an easy base for a few very different days out. The three places listed here share one thing: they are all in and around Hohoe itself, so you can move between town life and open country without a long journey. Beyond that, they could hardly be more different.

The Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the Togo-Buen ranges near Wli-Agorviefe and protects the Wli Waterfalls, which the Forestry Commission calls Ghana's highest. Hohoe Market, also known as Hohoe Central Market, is the town's principal trading centre, busy with rice, yam, fish, maize and fruits. Hohoe Sports Stadium is the municipal multi-purpose ground, opened on 30 November 2024, with a FIFA-standard AstroTurf pitch and home to Hohoe United.

So you can spend a morning in forest and falling water, an afternoon among traders and produce, and an evening watching local football. That mix is the reason to come.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan the sanctuary and the market on separate days if you like a slower pace, since one is a walk in protected country and the other is a crowded trading centre. Ask locally about the route to Wli-Agorviefe and about conditions at the falls before setting out, and check the stadium's fixture list if you hope to catch Hohoe United at home. Market days are busiest early. Carry water and small change, and confirm current arrangements for each site before you travel, as details can change.
