Explore Ghana
Ghana's national parks hold some of the country's richest forest, mountain and savanna country, and each of the places gathered here rewards travellers who are happy to walk. Kakum National Park, a 375 sq km protected forest near Abrafo in the Central Region, is the best known, largely for its canopy walkway. Far to the west, Nini-Suhien National Park is a 160 km² wet evergreen forest that, together with the Ankasa Resource Reserve, forms the roughly 500 km² Ankasa Conservation Area. In the Oti Region on the Togo border, Kyabobo National Park spreads across mountainous ground where forest meets savanna, with waterfalls and trails for hiking and mountain biking.
What they share is forest and wildlife, guided walking and a sense of distance from the coast's busier stops. They differ in character and in how you reach them. Kakum sits about 33 km north of Cape Coast and suits a shorter visit. Kyabobo is a journey in itself, entered from its headquarters and entrance about 5 km off the Ho–Temale Road at Nkwanta, where guided hikes and bike rental are arranged. Within Kyabobo, Laboum Waterfall drops in tiers on the Laboum River, and Kyabobo Lower Waterfalls is generally identified with its lower cascade. Both are reached only on foot.
Good to know
Plan around walking, not driving. Trails at Kakum, Nini-Suhien and Kyabobo are best tackled in sturdy shoes, with water and rain protection, since these are forest and mountain parks. Arrange guided hikes and bike rental at the Kyabobo headquarters and entrance near Nkwanta before setting out, and allow time for the hike to Laboum Waterfall or Kyabobo Lower Waterfalls. Distances between these parks are long, so group nearby sites into one trip rather than trying to see them all at once. Before you travel, check current access, trail conditions and guide availability directly with each park, as arrangements can change.
