About Tafi Abuife Kente Weaving Village
Tafi Abuife is a small kente-weaving community in the Tafi Traditional Area, Afadzato South District, Volta Region, where the local economy centres on Ewe-style kente strip weaving on wooden looms. Visit Ghana, the Ghana Tourism Authority's site, calls it "one of Ghana's principal weaving sites" and lists seeing kente weaving there among the things to do from Tafi-Atome.
The weaving is the reason to come. Long narrow strips are woven and later sewn into full cloths; directory sources describe a single strip taking roughly five hours, double weaves about seven, and intricate triple weaves up to nine. Ewe kente here is described as often carrying representational motifs — birds or household objects — alongside geometric shapes, unlike the Ashanti kente associated with Kumasi. Cotton is largely imported and dyed in Accra. Local oral history holds that the community's founders settled this forested area after observing a giant spider weaving its web, and children are said to begin learning thread spinning and loom work around age seven.
Visitors can reasonably expect to watch weavers at work, hear explanations of what patterns and colours signify, and buy strips or finished pieces directly from weavers. Short demonstrations allow a brief turn at the loom, while multi-day apprenticeships must be arranged in advance with village elders. Three large government-funded weaving houses are described as allowing work to continue through the rainy season, and a kente showroom appears in a visitor account.
Practical details are only partly documented. No official operator hours or published entrance fee were found. Directory guidance suggests most weaving activity happens 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, Monday to Saturday, with Sunday generally a rest day when communal sheds may be quiet. Reported costs vary: a small donation or facility fee of roughly 20–50 GHS at the community centre, with demonstration prices negotiated on site, and one 2024 visitor account of paying 50 cedis for a guided visit including the showroom. Another directory notes browsing may be free in some contexts while demonstrations, guides or purchases carry costs. Confirm current arrangements locally.
Access accounts differ. From Tafi-Atome, Visit Ghana gives 14 km by car or 7 km by trail on foot or rented bicycle, with a guide able to accompany visitors or give directions. FindTourGuide places the village off the Ho–Hohoe road at the Logba Alekpeti junction, with local taxis or motorbikes charging 10–20 GHS for the final leg, and describes a six-kilometre Cemetery Trail to the monkey sanctuary. Evendo describes roughly 15 km and 20–30 minutes by taxi from Hohoe, or a tro-tro towards Tafi Atome plus about a one-kilometre walk on a slightly uneven path. Treat distances and fares as approximate.
