Mountains and hills in Ghana

Ghana's high ground is one of the country's best-kept travel pleasures. From the forest-savanna ridges of Kyabobo National Park on the Togo border to the flat-topped bulk of Mount Adaklu near Ho, these mountains and hills share cool air, wide views and warm welcomes from the communities who live on their slopes. Most are climbed on foot, and most reward you with a panorama that stretches far beyond the towns below.

They differ in character and in effort. Mount Gemi rises above Amedzofe, where the Avatime Hills viewpoint and the Ote Falls sit close by, while the Aburi Mountain and Akuapem Ridge viewpoint offers gentler walking and noticeably cooler weather above Greater Accra. Twin Mountain near Liati Wote is a steeper, quieter guided hike, and the Mafi Kumase igneous mountain is climbed informally by a stepped route. For something less strenuous, the Kpando Lake Mountain zipline combines a canopy walk and telescope views over Lake Volta, and Odweanoma Mountain at Atibie-Kwahu is Ghana's main paragliding take-off point, overlooking Nkawkaw.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the walk, not just the view: several of these hills are reached on guided trails, so arrange a local guide in advance, especially for Mount Adaklu, Twin Mountain and Kyabobo National Park. Travel light with water, sun protection and shoes with grip, and start early to avoid the heat. Distances between the Volta, Oti, Eastern and Central Tongu areas are long, so group nearby sites into one trip rather than criss-crossing the country. Check trail conditions, guide availability and the weather before setting out, and confirm festival dates if you hope to catch the Easter paragliding festival. Akosombo, with guest houses such as 3A's Guest House, makes a useful base for the Eastern Region hills.
