Hiking trails in Volta Region

The Volta Region rewards anyone willing to walk. Around Amedzofe, a hill settlement in the Avatime Hills at the foot of Mount Gemi, trails lead up to a summit cross with wide views over the surrounding hills, down to the multi-tiered Ote Falls by forest path and canopy walkway, and on to the steep, roughly two-hour route to Abadzeme Falls. Nearby, the Amedzofe Sacred Cave sits in a cliff of Mount Gemi, one of two sacred sites in the Ho West District opened to tourism.

What these places share is forest, water and community guiding. They differ in effort and reward. At Wli, in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, an easy trail reaches the lower falls of Wli Waterfalls while a longer guided hike continues to the upper cascade. From Liati Wote, a 45-minute to one-hour walk follows the sacred Tagbo River, crossed three times by bridges, to Tagbo Falls, and the steep Twin Mountain offers a quieter, more demanding day out. Elsewhere, Akpom Waterfall and its limestone cave at Logba Tota are about 30 minutes from the village, Kulugu Canyon Waterfall at Biakpa is reached only on foot via a rope-assisted cliff descent, and Mount Adaklu, a flat-topped mountain about 12 km from Ho, is climbed on guided hikes from Breeze Bar at its foot.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around walking time rather than distance, as several trails here are steep or rope-assisted. Guided hikes are the norm for Mount Adaklu, Twin Mountain and the community trails at Biakpa and Liati Wote, so arrange a guide before you set out. Emo Tour & Guiding in Kpando arranges guided trips across North Volta with transport partners, which helps if you are linking Amedzofe, Wli, Liati Wote and Kpando without your own vehicle. Bases include Abraerica Hospitalities and Tour in Amedzofe and Volta Serene Hotel in Ho. Carry water, wear shoes with grip, and check trail and weather conditions locally before you go.
