Why visit
About Denu Market
Denu Market is the main trading market in Denu, the administrative capital of Ketu South Municipal in the Volta Region of Ghana. Denu sits in the south-eastern corner of the country, in a municipality bounded by Ketu North to the north, Togo to the east, the Gulf of Guinea to the south and Keta Municipal to the west. The town lies near Aflao, the border town with Togo, and is described as sandwiched between the sea and a lagoon. The market stands along the Denu–Keta road corridor, on the route travellers use between Aflao and Keta.
Trade in Ketu South is organised around market rotation. Market centres are located at Denu, Agbozume and Aflao, and these markets are held on a rotational basis every four days, according to a Ministry of Finance composite budget document for the district. Satellite markets in Aflao and Wudoaba are held mostly daily. A YouTube walkthrough posted in November 2024 likewise describes Denu Market as opening roughly every four or five days, with traders selling affordable items including spinach, fish, toffee and other vegetables. A directory listing, by contrast, describes the market as operating daily and being particularly vibrant on market days, so the exact pattern of trading days is not consistently stated across sources.
What a visitor can reasonably expect is a working food and goods market rather than a staged attraction. A Graphic Online report on Volta Region market days lists Denu among markets that host vegetable and food crop farmers, and a News Ghana headline reports congestion along the Denu market stretch of the Denu–Keta road, with market activity overflowing onto the main road on market days. That overflow is worth planning around: the market area and the adjacent road function together on busy days.
Practical planning is limited by what the available sources confirm. Coordinates recorded for Denu town are not a verified market entrance, and no opening hours, fees or facilities are documented here. Visitors travelling the Aflao road should treat market-day timing as the key variable and confirm locally before setting out.
