Why visit

About Tagbo River

The Tagbo River is the stream that creates and feeds Tagbo Falls, flowing through rainforest near Liati Wote in the Afadzato South District of Ghana's Volta Region. The village sits at the foot of Mount Afadjato, Ghana's highest peak at 885 m, and the falls lie roughly 27 km east of Hohoe. The river is named in the falls' name, and the two are visited as one feature.

For visitors, the river is mainly encountered on foot. The Tagbo Falls forest trail crosses the meandering Tagbo River three times on concrete and wooden bridges, passing through farmlands and coffee plantations. The walk is generally described as relatively easy, taking about 45 minutes to one hour each way, with one or two steep sections that become slippery in the rainy season. The trail begins at the community park, sharing a trailhead with Mount Afadjato, and is marked throughout. The river is lined with palm trees and bamboo forest, and the falls descend in several stages, the last about 60 m high.

The river also carries significance for the Liati Wote community, where it is regarded as sacred. Eating fish from the river is taboo, and traditional authorities forbid swimming in the water beneath the falls — a restriction that helps keep the water clear. Visitors should treat these customs as binding rather than as background detail.
