Viewpoints in Volta Region

The Volta Region rewards anyone willing to climb a little. Its viewpoints are mostly high ground: the summit cross above Amedzofe on Mount Gemi, the flat-topped Mount Adaklu near Ho, the igneous rock known locally as Akpokpo at Mafi Kumase, and the steep twin peaks near Liati Wote in the Agumatsa Range. Each is reached on foot, and each gives back wide views over hills, valleys or, from the mountain-top site above Kpando, Lake Volta through a telescope.

They differ in effort and in mood. Mount Gemi and the Amedzofe Township and Avatime Hills Viewpoint sit in the same hill settlement, where the Ote Falls drops in tiers below a forest trail and canopy walkway. Mount Adaklu and Twin Mountain are guided community hikes, the latter quieter and more demanding. Mafi Kumase is climbed informally by a stepped route. If you would rather look than climb, the hilltop hotels on Kabakaba Hill in Ho, African Hill Resort and Volta Serene Hotel, put the view at your table.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around walking, not driving: most of these places are reached on foot, and some trails are steep or informal. Guided hikes are the norm at Mount Adaklu, from Breeze Bar at its foot, and at Twin Mountain near Liati Wote, so arrange a guide locally rather than turning up expecting one. Amedzofe makes a natural base for Mount Gemi, the Avatime Hills viewpoint and Ote Falls in one visit, while Ho is convenient for Mount Adaklu and the Kabakaba Hill hotels. Check trail conditions and weather before setting out, carry water, and confirm arrangements with hotels or community guides in advance.
