Beaches in Ghana

Ghana's coastline runs for hundreds of kilometres along the Atlantic, and the beaches along it are as varied as the towns behind them. Some are busy and musical, like Labadi Beach in Accra, where weekends bring drumming and dancing. Others are quiet working shorelines, such as Dixcove Beach below Fort Metal Cross, or Cape Coast Castle Beach, where fishing boats come in beneath the castle walls. Many sit where a river meets the sea, including Ada Foah Beach, about 120 km from Accra, and Butre Beach, also called Coconut Beach, at the mouth of the Butre River.

What these places share is sand, ocean and a strong sense of local life. Where they differ is in what you can do. Busua Beach is known as the country's leading surf destination, with surf schools on the sand. Akwidaa Beach and nearby Ezile Bay Beach, close to Cape Three Points, offer turtle nesting, beach lodges and community tourism. Family-friendly resorts such as Aborigines Beach at Keta and Ankobra Beach Retreat at Axim add chalets and restaurants. Elsewhere, Komenda Beach is known for its sea cave, and Prince's Town Beach stretches long and unspoiled near Fort Gross Friedrichsburg.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the coast's spread: Greater Accra beaches such as Prampram, Teshie and Labadi are close to the capital, while the Western Region beaches around Axim, Busua, Butre and Akwidaa sit much further west, so group nearby places into one trip. The coastal road links Accra with Anomabo and Cape Coast, and Cape Coast with Elmina, Brenu Akyinim and Kakum Rainforest. Check before you go whether a beach has facilities, entrance fees or lifeguards, as some are simply open shoreline with no documented amenities. Surf and currents can be strong, particularly at Cape Coast Castle Beach, so swim with care and ask locally.
