About Butre Beach

Butre Beach, also called Coconut Beach, is the beach at Butre, a working fishing village on the Ahanta coast of Ghana's Western Region, where the Butre River meets the Atlantic. The village is built on both banks of the river estuary, and a dugout canoe crossing is part of daily life there. The beach itself is a relatively narrow strip of sand below Fort Batenstein, a 17th-century Dutch fort on the hill above the village.

The setting is a sheltered bay in the Ahanta West Municipal District. Hideout Lodge, which operates on the beach, describes it as a low-lying, palm-fringed stretch of "powder gold sand" suited to strolling, relaxing and walking. Beachmeter characterises the beach as tranquil and uncrowded, and notes that the waves and currents can be tricky and the water gets deep quickly; it advises caution with strong waves and seaward currents. In season, usually September to March, sea turtles lay eggs on the beach, and the two beach lodges run turtle conservation programmes.

Two beachfront lodges with restaurants sit on the beach: Hideout Lodge, with dorm rooms with shared facilities and self-contained bungalows plus a beachfront wooden deck, and Fanta's Folly Beach Lodge, with 12 en suite chalets, most with sea views, serving French and Ghanaian food. A small locally owned bar is next door to Hideout Lodge. Dining and shopping options are few, and there is no reliable WiFi. The nearest ATM is in Agona and is Visa only.

Activities documented by the operator include canoe and crocodile safaris upstream on the Butre River in hand-made local canoes, lasting about 1 to 1.5 hours, beach drumming and bonfire jams, and a walk up to Fort Batenstein. Beachmeter also lists bodyboarding, swimming, sun-bathing, turtle conservation and village life.

Butre is about 40 km from Takoradi and 10 km from Agona, from where a tro-tro runs to the village; visitors then usually walk from the village centre along the beach to their accommodation. A taxi can be taken from Takoradi or Agona, or you can drive following the signs. From Busua it is a 45-minute walk, with the Akwaaba guide giving roughly 6 km and 2 to 3 hours on the coastal trail. Hideout Lodge is reachable only by boat or on foot. Roads to Butre can be very challenging after heavy rain, and no formal accessibility provision such as wheelchair access is documented.
