Why visit

About Apam Beach

Apam Beach is the sandy Atlantic shoreline of Apam, a fishing town and the capital of Gomoa West District in Ghana's Central Region. The town sits on the Gulf of Guinea coast roughly 45 km east of Cape Coast, and the beach runs along its open shoreline rather than forming a gated attraction with a formal entrance.

The setting is dominated by the sea and by fishing. Apam's harbour and rocky shoreline are the backdrop to the beach, and Fort Lijdzaamheid — also known as Fort Patience, a Dutch-built fort completed in 1702 — stands on a rocky peninsula on the south side of town overlooking the harbour. Ghana Museums and Monuments Board describes the fort as built on a promontory overlooking a serene beach and bay, which corroborates the beach's coastal position at Apam. Fishing is the town's main industry, and the Benyah Lagoon nearby is used for salt production.

Travel-guide sources describe the beach as a place for a beach day: relaxing, water activities, kite surfing, sunbathing, and children building sandcastles. Boat trips to nearby islands and dolphin watching are described as offered in the area. These are secondary travel-guide accounts rather than official operator information, so they should be treated as indicative rather than confirmed.

Swimming safety is a documented concern here. On 7–8 March 2021, teenagers swimming at Apam Beach drowned; Ghana Police confirmed the recovery of 12 bodies of young people aged 14–17, with two survivors rescued, and 13 victims were buried in a mass funeral on 16 March 2021. Community members said the children used unapproved routes during COVID-19 restrictions on beachgoing. Strong Gulf of Guinea currents are a recognised hazard along this coast.

Practical information is limited. No official operator, opening hours, entrance fee, contact details or accessibility information was found for the beach. Visitors should plan on the basis that this is an open, working shoreline in a fishing town, and should seek current local guidance on sea conditions before entering the water.
