Why visit

About Ada Foah Beach

Ada Foah Beach sits at the mouth of the Volta River in the Ada East District of the Greater Accra Region, about 120 km from Accra, where the river empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The shoreline is palm-lined, and the geography defines the visit: calm river water lies on one side of the estuary, while the Atlantic side carries rougher surf. The sandbar where the river meets the sea is reached by boat rather than on foot from the main strip.

That split character shapes what people do here. Swimming and wading are associated with the calmer water near the river mouth, while the Atlantic side can have strong surf and a current that pulls hard past the estuary — conditions that make entering the water a calculated decision rather than a casual one. Beyond the beach, the area is known for boat travel around the estuary's island communities and for watersports including speed boats, sailing, canoeing, kayaking and surfing. Fishing and everyday local life along the shore are part of the setting.

The estuary is also a nature destination. Mangrove forests, crocodile islands, migratory bird sites and marine turtle breeding points are documented in the area, and seabirds and endangered marine turtles use the sand bars as nesting grounds. Nearby Cocoloco Beach is noted as a sea-turtle breeding ground.

The town has a long trading history: a 16th-century Dutch trading port, Fort Kongenstein built by the Danes in 1783 — the fort that gave Ada Foah its name — and later a slave-trade market and a palm oil, palm kernel and rubber trading centre. Coastal erosion has washed much of the old town and fort into the sea. Ada Foah is the secondary venue of the annual Asafotufiami Festival in early August.

Practically, tro tros run regularly from Accra's Tudu Station and from Kasseh, and the town is also reachable by taxi, private car or STC bus from Accra; a ferry links Ada Foah to Anyanui across the Volta River. Guesthouses range from budget to luxury, with chop bars and bars around town, and a market operates on Wednesdays and Saturdays. A beach soccer tournament is held near the estuary on the first weekend of each month.
