Explore Ghana
The Western Region's coastline runs from the surf town of Busua to the far western edge near Cape Three Points, and it holds some of Ghana's most varied beaches. What they share is the Atlantic: warm water, strong surf and a working coast where fishing canoes still come ashore most mornings. What differs is the mood. Busua Beach is the country's leading surf destination, with surf schools on the sand, while Dixcove Beach is a working fishing shoreline set below the bluff-top Fort Metal Cross. At Akwidaa Beach you find a free, open village shoreline with turtle nesting and beach lodges, and nearby Ezile Bay Beach is a small almond-shaded bay with an ecolodge.
Further west, Axim Beach and Ankobra Beach Resort offer beachfront resort comfort, while Esiama Beach and Prince's Town Beach stay long, open and unspoiled. Towards Takoradi, Sports Club Beach lies behind the Atlantic Hotel, Aboadze Beach is a fishing shoreline about 20 km from the city, and Beyin Beach sits beside Fort Apollonia and the Amansuri wetland.
Good to know
Plan around the coast road rather than a single base: Takoradi is a useful starting point for Aboadze, Abuesi, Anlo Beach and Sports Club Beach, while Axim and Esiama suit the western stretches, and Akwidaa, Ezile Bay and Prince's Town cluster near Cape Three Points. Distances can take longer than they look, so allow generous travel time between stops. Some places are resorts with restaurants and chalets, such as Ankobra Beach Resort and Venice View Beach Resort, which is reservations-only; others, like Butre Beach and Anlo Beach, are village shorelines with little or no visitor facilities. Check tide and surf conditions before swimming, ask locally about turtle nesting seasons, and carry cash and water. Confirm access and opening arrangements directly before you set out.
