About Cape Three Points

Cape Three Points is a small peninsula and fishing village on the Atlantic Ocean in the Ahanta West Municipal District, Western Region of Ghana. It forms the southernmost tip of the country, sitting between the coastal village of Akwidaa and Princes Town. The village is locally called Atinkyin, and it is Ghana's southernmost community.

The cape's best-known feature is its lighthouses. The first was built in 1875 by the British as a navigational aid for trading vessels in the Gulf of Guinea; that original structure is now a ruin. A larger replacement completed in 1925 still functions and is solar-powered. The lighthouse is treated as a viewpoint: visitors who go up are offered a 360-degree view of the coastal area.

Getting there takes planning. The site is remote, roughly an hour's drive from Agona and nearly two hours from Takoradi, and the roads are described as going from bad to terrible in heavy rain. Taxis and tro-tros from Agona are used, and it is also possible to walk in from Akwidaa, about 1.5 hours. Visiting the lighthouse involves a walk along the beach and through the village, roughly 1 to 1.5 hours round trip, over uneven ground; it is not step-free. Local guides lead this walk.

Facilities are limited. The village has two very basic bars but no formal restaurants or accommodation. The nearest proper accommodation is Escape3Points Ecolodge, about a 20-minute walk along the beach, which has chalets, a dormitory, a restaurant and bar, surfboard rental, batik workshops, drumming lessons and turtle conservation activities. The beach stretches almost 2 km and is used for surfing, bodyboarding and swimming, with strong currents and rip currents reported.

A small fee is charged to enter the lighthouse and grounds, with a small tip for the local guide; the exact amount is not published. A caretaker is reported to give tours on all days of the week and on public holidays, but this has not been verified. No dedicated contact for the lighthouse is published.
