Explore Ghana
The Central Region's coastline runs along the Atlantic and the Gulf of Guinea, and its beaches are as much working places as they are places to rest. Anomabo Beach is a wide, sandy stretch at Anomabo, about 115 km west of Accra on the coastal road, while Apam Beach forms the sandy shoreline of Apam, a fishing town and Gomoa West District capital about 45 km east of Cape Coast. Winneba Beach is the working shoreline of Winneba (Simpa), a historic fishing port near the Ayensu River mouth.
What these places share is sand, sea and fishing life. Where they differ is in character and setting. Brenu Beach at Brenu Akyinim is a community-owned beach resort about 20 km from Cape Coast, close to Elmina Castle and Kakum Rainforest, so it suits travellers who want to pair the coast with history and forest. Komenda Beach is known for the tunnel-like Komenda Sea Cave a few metres from Komenda College of Education. Cape Coast Castle Beach, directly below Cape Coast Castle, is open-access but a working fishing beach with dangerous surf and no documented visitor amenities.
Good to know
Plan around the coast road, which links Accra with Anomabo, Cape Coast, Komenda, Apam and Winneba, and allow generous time between stops. Swimming is not safe everywhere: Cape Coast Castle Beach has dangerous surf, and the working beaches at Winneba and Apam are busy with fishing rather than set up for visitors. Brenu Beach is community-owned, so expect a quieter, more organised visit. Check conditions and local advice before you travel, and confirm what facilities, if any, are available at each beach on the day.
