About Busua Beach

Busua Beach is the sandy beach at Busua, a fishing village and beach resort in the Ahanta West District of Ghana's Western Region, on the Gulf of Guinea roughly 30 km west of Sekondi-Takoradi. The beach runs along a curved bay of golden sand facing the open Atlantic, and the town is the seat of the Ahanta and a core point of tourism in the district.

The beach is best known as a surfing destination. It is widely described as Ghana's leading surf beach, built around a consistent left-hand break, with surf schools operating directly on the sand offering lessons and board rental. The waves are generally described as relatively approachable, which is why the break is associated with learners as well as more experienced surfers.

Busua is a working fishing village rather than a purpose-built resort. Fishermen haul nets at dawn, and afternoon beach football is a regular sight that visitors can join. Inhabitants speak the Ahanta dialect of Akan, and the village is known for its blue marlin and tuna fishery. Busua was a seaside resort for wealthier locals from Sekondi-Takoradi until the 1960s, and European tourists arrived in the 1970s and 1980s, when the town still lacked electricity and running water until the late 1990s. Coconut trees along the shore died in a palm disease outbreak in the early 1990s, leaving the long sandy beach visible today.

Nearby, Fort Metal Cross at Dixcove lies about 3 km west, roughly a 25-minute walk, with Fort Batenstein to the east and Abokwa Island close by.

Access is by a paved road from Sekondi; the drive from Takoradi is estimated at about 45 minutes. Parking near guesthouses and beach access points is described as free and informal. Guesthouses, lodges and restaurants cluster within a few hundred metres of the sand.

Safety information conflicts. One beach guide warns of rip currents, states that no permanent lifeguard service is confirmed, and advises avoiding October to November, while Wikipedia describes this coastline as free of dangerous currents. Visitors should treat conditions as variable and seek local advice on the day.
