Why visit
About Komenda Beach
Komenda Beach is a coastal beach on the Gulf of Guinea at Komenda, in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipal District of Ghana's Central Region. It is best known for the Komenda Sea Cave, also called Queen Elizabeth Cave — a narrow, tunnel-like sea cave open at both ends, sitting a few metres from Komenda College of Education.
The cave is the feature that distinguishes this stretch of shore. It lies west of Komenda town near the shoreline, and is described as one of the natural erosional features carved into sandstone by the sea. Its mouth opens west and the passage runs northeast, roughly parallel to the shore. The floor area is given as about 200 square metres, with a low ceiling and a corridor restricted by rock debris; guides are recommended for anyone going inside.
The beach itself is reached by stairs leading down from the Komenda College premises to the shore. Visitor accounts describe rocky outcrops, a small natural swimming pool and caves along this coast. Wikimedia Commons documents sea caves, blow-holes and sandy beach landforms at Komenda, photographed by University of Ghana geography students studying erosional and depositional coastal landforms — a useful indication of what the shoreline actually contains.
GhanaWeb's Central Region tourism round-up independently corroborates the cave as a narrow tunnel-like cave open at both ends, a few metres from the college, and calls it a unique but little-publicised attraction. It also records local history that the cave served as a hideout during World War II.
Practical planning facts are thin. No opening hours, fees, coordinates or accessibility provisions are established in the available sources, and wheelchair access is not documented. Treat the cave interior as a guided, low-clearance space rather than a casual walk-through, and confirm current access arrangements locally before travelling.
