Greater Accra's coastline runs east from the capital along the Atlantic, and these four beaches show how varied that shoreline can be. All of them share warm sea, open sand and an easy-going Ghanaian welcome, but each has its own character and its own reason to visit.
Labadi Beach, also known as La Pleasure Beach, sits in the town of La near Teshie and is Accra's busiest beach, known for weekend music, drumming and dancing, with an entrance fee for non-hotel guests. Teshie Beach, on the Atlantic shoreline at Teshie, is quieter and more local in feel. Further east, Prampram Beach is the Atlantic-facing beachfront of Prampram (Gbugbla), about 15 km east of Tema. And at Ada Foah Beach, roughly 120 km from Accra, palms line the sand where the Volta River meets the Atlantic, with nature, river, recreation and boat experiences on offer.
So whether you want a lively weekend crowd, a simple stretch of sand near the city, or an estuary boat trip, this stretch of coast has something for you.
Good to know
Plan around the weekend if you want the music and drumming at Labadi Beach, and remember there is an entrance fee for non-hotel guests. Teshie and Prampram are straightforward beach stops, while Ada Foah rewards a longer trip, so allow time for the drive from Accra and for a boat experience on the river. Getting between these beaches is easiest by road, with Prampram about 15 km east of Tema and Ada Foah about 120 km from Accra. Before setting out, check current conditions and local advice, take cash for any fees, and be mindful of the sea.
