About Winneba Beach

Winneba Beach is the shoreline of Winneba, traditionally known as Simpa, a historic fishing port and the capital of the Effutu Municipal District in Ghana's Central Region. The town sits on the Gulf of Guinea near the mouth of the Ayensu River, roughly 140 km east of Cape Coast and about 55 km west of Accra.

The beach is best understood as a working coastal front rather than a resort. Sea-going dugout canoes are parked on the sand between fishing trips, and the shoreline mixes open sand with active fishing areas where boats and nets are part of daily life. Fishing and services are the town's main industries, and the sea front reflects that.

Winneba's maritime history explains the setting. Britannica records that the town was originally a roadstead port dependent on forest products from the Swedru area, and that all port activity ceased in 1962 with the opening of Tema harbour. Afterwards the town relied on fishing, coconut-palm agriculture and some tourism, supported by its bathing beach.

The town is also known for the Aboakyer deer-hunting festival and a New Year fancy-dress masquerade festival, both part of Effutu civic life. Visitors interested in local culture may find these periods the most eventful in the town's calendar.

The Effutu Municipal Assembly is the municipal authority for the area and oversees the Winneba Landing Beach site and a Beach Committee. Its published contact details are [email protected] and telephone 0209484466.
