Explore Ghana
Ghana rewards walkers. The twenty places gathered here all offer a hiking trail, and between them they show how varied a walk in Ghana can be: forest paths to waterfalls, a canopy walkway at Kakum National Park, the crater rim above Lake Bosomtwe, granite hills at Shai Hills Resource Reserve, and the climb up Mount Gemi above Amedzofe.
What they share is shade, birdsong and the company of local guides and communities. Where they differ is in terrain and mood. In the Eastern Region you can pair Boti Falls with Umbrella Rock, or walk to Akaa Falls and the marked forest path to Asenema Waterfalls. In the Volta Region, Tagbo Falls at Liati Wote is reached by a walk of about 45 minutes to an hour, crossing the sacred Tagbo River three times, while Ote Falls sits above Amedzofe. Further west lie the beaches at Butre and Ezile Bay, and in the north, Kyabobo National Park and the Wechiau Hippopotamus Sanctuary on the Black Volta.
Good to know
Plan around the seasons. Several falls here, including Akaa, Asenema, Boti and Tsenku, are seasonal, so ask locally before travelling. Many trails are walked with a guide from the nearby village, and community tourism fees support those communities. Getting between places usually means road travel from a base such as Accra, Kumasi, Koforidua or Ho, so allow generous time and start walks early in the day. Wear shoes with grip, carry water and rain protection, and take a local contact number for the site. Check current access, guide availability and any entry arrangements before you set out.
