About Aburi Botanical Gardens
Aburi Botanical Gardens is a botanical garden in Aburi, in the Akuapim South Municipal District of Ghana's Eastern Region. It covers 64.8 hectares (160 acres) on hilly terrain in the Akuapem Hills, and it opened in March 1890. The garden was founded by Governor William Brandford-Griffith and Dr. John Farrell Easmon, a Sierra Leonean medical doctor. The site had earlier held a sanatorium built in 1875 for Gold Coast government officials, and in 1890 William Crowther, a student from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, was appointed the garden's first curator.
The garden's history is closely tied to Ghanaian agriculture. It encouraged cocoa production in southern Ghana by supplying cheap cocoa seedlings and information on scientific farming, and after Hevea brasiliensis was sent from Kew in 1893, it also encouraged rubber production. Tree species on the grounds include silk cotton (Ceiba pentandra), mahogany, cedar and silver oak. Today the garden is involved in research, growing endangered plants, plant multiplication, horticultural training and environmental education.
For visitors, the garden is a developed green space with lawns, plant collections and recreation areas. Reported facilities include an Orchid House, a Palm Walk or Avenue of roughly 270 metres of Roystonea regia palms, native and exotic plant collections, a Bush House and Rock Garden, and large Ficus and kapok trees. Guided tours and a School of Horticulture operate on site.
Reported visitor amenities include picnic areas with benches and tables, playgrounds, barbecue or grill zones, pet-friendly areas, hiking trails and bike rentals. Food is listed at the Rose Plot Cafeteria and the Royal Botanical Gardens Restaurant, and there is a craft village with wood carvers, souvenir and plant sales, colonial-style accommodation, and restrooms. One travel listing tags the garden as wheelchair accessible and guide dogs welcome, but no official accessibility statement or description of accessible paths and facilities was found, and the site sits on hilly ground.
The garden is listed at Aburi Akuapim South, Eastern Region, P.O. Box 23 Aburi, with telephone +233 244 074 040 and mobile +233 505 234 604 as published by ghana-net. Opening hours, entry fees and current tour schedules were not confirmed in the available sources, so visitors should verify these directly before travelling.
