About Wli Waterfalls

Wli Waterfalls, known locally as Agumatsa Falls, is a waterfall near the village of Wli in the Hohoe Municipal District of the Volta Region, close to the Togo border. The name is pronounced "vlee," and the local name Agumatsa is often translated as "Allow Me to Flow." The falls are fed by the Agumatsa River and lie within the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary, whose cliffs are home to a large colony of fruit bats; the surrounding area also supports butterflies, birds, monkeys and baboons.

There are two cascades, a lower and an upper fall. The lower falls is the more accessible and the more popular of the two, reached by an easy, mostly flat and largely shaded forest trail from the visitor centre that takes roughly 45 minutes. A plunge pool sits at its base. The upper falls is a longer, more demanding hike of about three to four hours and requires a local guide.

The site sits roughly 20 km from Hohoe and about 280 km from Accra. From Hohoe, the drive runs east, turning right at Lipke Bakwa to reach Wli in 3 km; the visitor centre is on the edge of the village, and trotros travel these roads frequently. The falls are open 8 am to 5 pm daily.

Entry fees are tiered for Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians, with separate rates for the upper falls. At the lower falls, Ghanaian adults pay GHS 25 and non-Ghanaian adults GHS 60, with reduced rates for children and students and a family pack for five at GHS 60. Upper falls rates run from GHS 60 to GHS 70 for Ghanaian adults and GHS 80 to GHS 90 for non-Ghanaian adults, depending on whether the short or long route is taken. Commercial still and video photographers are charged extra.

Facilities include a visitor centre and tourist office, a car park and basic refreshment stalls, and guesthouses in the area offer food. Guided walks are available, and a local guide is mandatory for the upper falls.
