Explore Ghana
The Oti Region rewards travellers who are happy to walk for their views. Its trails lead through forest-savanna country on the Togo border, past waterfalls that keep flowing through the year, and into villages where community tourism is part of the welcome. Kyabobo National Park near Nkwanta is the anchor of the region, a mountainous park with hiking and mountain-biking trails, wildlife and waterfalls of its own. Within it, Laboum Waterfall drops in tiers along the Laboum River and can only be reached on foot, while Kyabobo Lower Waterfalls, generally identified with the lower tier of Laboum, is another cascade found by hiking.
Elsewhere the walking is gentler but no less rewarding. Bowiri Abohire Waterfall in the Biakoye District is reached by road via Kwamekrom and then about a 25-minute walk along a forest path, with a cave nearby. Kute Lower Falls at Kute village in the Jasikan Municipal District is the lower tier of a waterfall system, approached by a forest walk from the village. What these places share is shade, water and a trail underfoot; what differs is scale, terrain and how long you spend getting there.
Good to know
Start at the Kyabobo National Park Headquarters and Entrance at Nkwanta, about 5 km off the Ho–Temale Road, where guided hikes and bike rental are arranged. Arrange guides and transport in advance, as the waterfalls at Bowiri Abohire, Kute and Laboum are reached on foot and some trails are the only way in. Distances between Nkwanta, Kwamekrom, Aboabo and Jasikan are best covered by road, so plan each day around one area rather than several. Check trail conditions and water levels before setting out, wear shoes with grip, carry water and rain protection, and ask locally about community tourism arrangements and fees.
