Why visit
About Umbrella Rock
Umbrella Rock is a natural rock formation in the Yilo Krobo Municipal District of Ghana's Eastern Region, near Boti Falls and roughly 22 km from Koforidua, the regional capital. The Yilo Krobo Municipal Assembly lists it on its official tourism page as a unique rock formation near Boti Falls, and categorises the area under nature, viewpoint, hiking trail and community tourism.
The formation is a two-part rock known locally as Akataman: a large upper boulder rests on a much smaller base, creating an umbrella-like overhang. Sources differ on how many people the overhang can shelter from rain or sun, giving either about 12 to 15 or 15 to 20. The top of the rock is a viewpoint over the surrounding valley and is a popular photo stop.
Most visitors arrive on a guided hike of about 45 to 60 minutes from Boti Falls, through forest on uneven paths with steep descents and some scrambling over rocks. The same route can be covered by road from Boti Falls in about 13 minutes. Guides along the trail point out other formations, including the Sex Organ Rock, Prayer Rock, Africa Map Rock, Giant Footstep Rock, a tree growing out of rock, and an ancient "talking cave". Oral history among Yilo Krobo natives holds that the rock was found by a hunter who reported it to his community.
At the site, local vendors sell refreshments and souvenirs, and community guides are available at the entry point. Toilets, parking, signage and water points are not documented. No Umbrella Rock-specific entrance fee or opening hours are published; access is generally through the Boti Falls site ticket, which includes guided tours, and reported ticket figures conflict across sources and dates. The Ghana Tourism Authority's Boti Falls page lists mobile numbers 0553030517 and 0506429292, and the Eastern Regional Tourism Board can be reached on +233 (0)34 209 8031. Visitors should confirm current fees, hours and trail conditions directly before travelling.
