Why visit

About Bunso Eco Park

Bunso Eco Park, formerly the Bunso Arboretum, is an ecotourism park and botanical garden at Bunso in the Abuakwa South municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region. It sits about 4.1 km from Bunso junction (Linda Dor) on the Accra–Kumasi Road, along the Bunso–Nsutem Road, and Visit Ghana describes it as roughly two hours from Accra. The site combines semi-deciduous native forest with species introduced by the Plant Genetic Resources Centre of Bunso, which uses the arboretum for research.

For visitors, the appeal is a compact mix of forest and recreation. The park reports more than 600 species of trees, many with medicinal uses, along with over 110 species of birds, 30 species of butterflies, and a herb garden of more than 40 species. Activities advertised by the operator include a tree-top canopy walkway, a zipline, horse riding, an adult swing, a children's playground, picnic areas, hiking trails, guided nature tours, an indigenous foods tour, and cocoa-farming and village tours. Visit Ghana classifies the site under nature, forest reserve, hiking trail, family-friendly, community tourism and recreation categories.

Facilities listed by the operator include an information centre, a snack bar or café, washrooms and a large parking lot, plus an advertised swimming pool and programmes for educational and corporate groups. The park's own history notes it was officially opened in 1935 by two British nationals, Frank Thompson and David Gillet; it was later handed to the Centre for Scientific and Industrial Research as a research facility until 2019, when the government of Ghana, private companies and the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Council partnered to open it as a tourist facility.

Practical planning is straightforward but should be confirmed directly. The operator's contact page lists Monday–Thursday 11am–5pm and Friday–Sunday 10am–5pm, with a last entry hour of 4:30pm; a third-party directory instead shows 6:00–18:00, so hours are disputed and worth verifying before travelling. Contact numbers published by the operator include +233 (0) 55 328 5566, +233 (0) 24 607 7081, +233 (0) 24 842 5088 and WhatsApp +233 59 988 6980; Visit Ghana lists 0507274677.

Accessibility information is limited. A third-party tour listing states the activity is not wheelchair accessible and is near public transportation, but no official operator statement on step-free access, wheelchair provision or accessible facilities was found. The canopy walkway, zipline and forest trails involve suspended rope bridges and uneven terrain, so visitors with mobility needs should contact the park before planning a visit.
