Hiking trails in Western Region

The Western Region rewards travellers who like to walk. Three very different places here share one thing: trails that take you through forest, along the coast, and into villages where walking is simply how people get about. Butre Beach, also called Coconut Beach, is the narrow palm-fringed strip at the fishing village of Butre, where the Butre River meets the Atlantic. Further west, Ezile Bay Beach is a roughly 300 m almond-shaded beach in a small protected bay between Akwidaa and Katakor, near Cape Three Points, and is home to Ezile Bay Ecolodge. Inland, Nini-Suhien National Park is a 160 km² wet evergreen forest park that, together with the Ankasa Resource Reserve, forms the roughly 500 km² Ankasa Conservation Area.

They differ in mood as much as in landscape. Butre and Ezile Bay are coastal and community-run, with boat experiences and village life close at hand. Nini-Suhien is deep forest, a national park and wildlife reserve where the walking is about trees, birds and shade rather than sea views. All three list hiking trails among their experiences, so you can shape a trip that moves from shoreline to rainforest.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan your walking for the cooler early morning, and carry more water than you think you need. These places sit in different parts of the Western Region, so allow proper travel time between the coast and the forest rather than trying to fit all three into one day. Community tourism is central here, so ask locally about guides and boat trips when you arrive. Before setting out, check current conditions with the park or your lodge, since rain, river levels and trail access can change. Bring sturdy shoes, rain protection and cash, and confirm arrangements in advance.
