The Ashanti Region rewards walkers who head out from Kumasi into green, quiet country. All three places on this page share forest, water and trails, and all sit within easy reach of the city, yet each offers a different kind of day out. Lake Bosomtwe, near Abono, is Ghana's only true inland natural lake, resting in a meteorite crater around a million years old, roughly 30 km south-east of Kumasi. Above it runs the Lake Bosomtwe Crater Rim Trail, a forested route along the crater edge that gives you the lake from a height. Further east at Kubease, the Bobiri Forest Reserve and Butterfly Sanctuary protects 54.65 km² of semi-deciduous rainforest, managed by CSIR-FORIG, with butterflies, birds and shaded walking paths. So the lake gives you water and crater views, the rim trail gives you a climb with a view, and Bobiri gives you deep forest and wildlife. Together they make a gentle introduction to hiking in Ashanti, whether you have a single free day or a long weekend.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around Kumasi, which is the natural base for all three places. The lake and its rim trail start near Abono, about 30 km south-east of Kumasi, while Bobiri sits at Kubease, about 35 km southeast of Kumasi, so a day can combine a walk with a drive. Arrange transport in advance and agree your return, as these are rural spots. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and rain protection, and expect mud after rain. Check current access, guide availability and any entry arrangements before setting out, and ask locally about conditions on the crater rim trail. Bobiri is a reserve and sanctuary, so follow guidance on staying on paths and respecting wildlife.
