Hiking trails in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region is where Ghana's hills, forest and water meet, and walking is the best way to see it. Almost everything on this page shares the same thread: a trail. Some are short marked walks to a waterfall, others are guided forest hikes to a viewpoint, and a few are gentle strolls through gardens or along a riverbank. What differs is the setting and the effort involved. Around Aburi you have the Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Aburi Mountain / Akuapem Ridge Viewpoint, where the air is cooler and the views stretch far. Near Koforidua and Opersika, Boti Falls, Akaa Falls and Umbrella Rock reward a walk through forest with water and rock formations. Further north, Asenema Waterfalls at Adukrom, Bunso Eco Park and Asubone Waterfall at Atibie each offer their own pace. At Akosombo, Afrikiko Riverfront Resort and BridgeView Resort pair trails with the Volta River and the Adomi Bridge.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the seasons: several waterfalls here are seasonal, so ask locally before travelling for them. Base yourself in Aburi, Koforidua or Akosombo and group nearby places together, since Boti Falls, Akaa Falls and Umbrella Rock sit close to one another. Roads between towns are the main way to get around; a car and driver makes the scattered stops far easier. Wear sturdy shoes, carry water and rain protection, and expect mud after rain. Some sites are community-run, so hire a local guide where offered and check conditions and access before you set out.
