Why visit
About Aburi Mountain / Akuapem Ridge Viewpoint
The Aburi Mountain / Akuapem Ridge is a hill range on the Akuapem-Togo Range, rising above the town of Aburi in the Akuapem South Municipal District of Ghana's Eastern Region. The ridge is characterised as a 350–500 m high range roughly 50 km inland from Accra, and it is home to historic towns including Aburi, Mampong, Akropong and Larteh. Because of the altitude, the climate here is cooler than in neighbouring Accra.
For a visitor, the ridge's main draw is its panoramic viewpoints. From the road climbing the hillside to Aburi, much of Greater Accra is visible below. The ridge is also described as a scenic hiking and walking route, and the Aburi Forest Reserve is a protected forest area offering birdlife and quiet trails. Comfortable shoes are recommended for walking or hiking the Aburi Mountains.
The setting is straightforward to place: the ridge sits north-east of Accra, reached by road, with the climb to Aburi on a toll road. Published descriptions put the drive at roughly 45 minutes to an hour from the city. Aburi itself is known for the Aburi Botanical Gardens and the Odwira Festival; the gardens grew out of an agricultural research farm set up near Aburi by British residents in 1891, and the name Aburi is an adulterated version of "Abude" used by European missionaries and traders.
Practical planning is limited by what is documented. No formal accessibility information — wheelchair or step-free access — was found for the ridge or its viewpoints, and no verified coordinates exist for the ridge or viewpoint itself; the coordinates commonly cited are for the town of Aburi. Visitors should also note that the one stopping space for pictures on that section of road carries a "No Stopping" sign, so roadside viewing may not be possible at that point. No opening hours, fees or facilities are confirmed here.
