About Amedzofe Township and Avatime Hills Viewpoint

Amedzofe is a small settlement in the Avatime Hills of the Ho West District, Volta Region, Ghana, north of the regional capital, Ho. Ghana's official tourism portal, Visit Ghana, describes it as the highest habitable place in the country, at more than 600 metres, sitting at the foot of Mount Gemi. Other sources give different figures for the elevation, so the exact height is best treated as approximate.

The town's setting is its main draw. It lies in the Avatime Hills, and both the mountain and the church site are described as offering wide views that reach as far as Lake Volta when the weather is clear. Amedzofe is also noted as a hiking destination, with routes up Mount Gemi and down into the valley to a waterfall.

At the top of Mount Gemi stands a large cross, described by Visit Ghana as four metres tall and built by German missionaries in the 1930s. In the village itself, a church and a bell tower occupy one of the highest points. Older accounts add that the Amedzofe Training School was built in 1880 by German missionaries, and that the town holds the oldest EP Church in the Avatime Traditional Area, built in 1889.

The Ote (Amedzofe) Falls are reached on foot, by a walk of roughly 30 to 40 minutes through forest, with a steep final descent that is aided by ropes. A canopy walkway near the falls opened in November 2022.

Practical detail is limited in the available sources. Amedzofe is described as having a basic tourist centre and inexpensive guesthouses, but no verified opening hours, fees, guide arrangements or transport schedules were found, and visitors should confirm these locally before travelling.
