About Akpom Waterfall and Limestone Cave

Akpom Waterfall, also written Akpom Falls, is a waterfall at Logba Tota in the Afadzato South District of Ghana's Volta Region. A limestone cavern lies immediately adjacent to the falls, and the two are usually described together as the main attraction around the village. A local Kpando tour operator calls it "the main attraction around Logba Tota" and "amazing and unique ... with a limestone cavern."

Logba Tota sits high in the Avatime hills on a steep forested slope, with views of surrounding villages, valleys, Mount Gemi and Lake Volta. The falls lie just outside the village, reached by road toward Logba Tota. The setting is mountainous, and the site is listed among nature, cave, hiking trail and community tourism categories.

The cave is the reason most visitors are told to carry a torch. It is described as containing stalactites and stalagmites, with a limestone pillar noted inside, and an "umbrella stone" recorded at the site. A cliff wall stretching over 200 metres is also noted. In a 2022 visitor video, a local guide explains the name Akpom as referring to an eagle, giving a sense of "eagle pool," and describes the cave as best entered in the dry season when water levels drop. The same guide describes the site as having been used historically as a hiding place.

Getting there is straightforward on foot. The walk from Logba Tota township to the falls takes about 30 minutes. The trail is described as friendly for children, though parts of it are steep and uneven. Local guides are available, and a local guide accompanies visitors in the visitor video reviewed here.

Practical planning is limited by what has been documented. Bring a torch for the cave, as the operator advises. No entrance fees, opening hours, guide rates or transport schedules appear in the sources consulted, so those details should be confirmed locally before travelling. The dry season is the period indicated for cave access.
